I am finding more interest in Craftsman Style Homes, which have been around since the late 19th century.  They were initially used as bungalow cottage style homes for resort lodging in England.

Depending where Craftsman Style homes where constructed determined their features.  For the most part they were constructed  in harmony with their local landscape, using materials that were readily available. Today’s craftsman style typically has a porch with distinctive square columns.

In the southern states they were more Spanish inspired with tile roofs, arches,  some brick or masonry with rough cut stones.  In the mid-west they were typically 2 stories  with front porches.  They featured a flat or hipped roof, bands of brick and concrete, beveled glass in doors.

Interior features include an open floor plan, window seats in bedrooms for sitting and storage, pocket doors and large windows grouped in units of 2 or 3 to bring in natural light. The focal point of the home is the front door.  They were typically the board and batten doors with some sort of art glass window.

Building a Craftsman Style home today is affordable through modern technology.  It is important to include modern with historic features.  Check with a Fine Line Homes Housing Consultant to see how they can help you design and build your Craftsman Style Home.
