A (Non)Secret Code

The PA Builders Association Code of Ethics should be known by consumers and followed by Builders. Builders must demonstrate trust and integrity and be approved as members. This should give a level of assurance but of course it is important to do your research on a builder and ask to see testimonies and references. Please read the Code of Ethics below, it really is one code that should not be kept a secret. [...]

Be Wary of Sticker Shopping

In today’s tough economy we are forced to sticker shop for savings every day. Do I buy the Fresh Empire apples that I hand pick for a $1.69 per pound, or do I buy the 3lb bag of prepackaged Empire apples for $3.99? Seems like a pretty straight forward answer, right? Well maybe not. Even though you are seeing a savings of $1.08 for equal weights you may not be seeing equal quality. [...]

Home Design for Entertaining

Whether it’s a formal dinner party or a family holiday dinner, memories are intertwined with meals together. The main things to look for are space, proximity to the kitchen and flexibility. Is the dining area a comfortable size for the table and chairs (and hutch, if you have one)? Is it close to the kitchen, reducing steps when carrying hot dishes, or clearing the table? Can the space be closed off for privacy? Does your dining space flow openly into an adjacent space for additional seating? [...]

The Importance of Drainage

The last couple of weeks have served as an important remainder of the importance of having a good water drainage system for your home. Some builders will offer you a footer drain or a sump pump or some only the sump pump pit. Here at Fine Line Homes we give you both a footer drain and sump pump standard and included with our homes. You will never have to settle for one or the other so you can rest assured that you will have a system that works during these wet times at redirecting water away from your foundation.

No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service

You sometimes see that sign in restaurants. While I ‘ve never viewed the sign in a home, there are some who do not want shoes worn in their home. They do not want the wear and tear on the flooring and dirt brought in to the house. That typically means shoes piled up near the door. It can be unsightly and some resort to storing shoes in the garage. The shoes can be cold in the winter and you never know what may crawl in them. [...]

Built-in Data Center

I know how a parent wants to keep an eye on their children while they are on the computer these days. There is a perfect solution to this problem, a “Data Center” right in the kitchen. I did this for a client who loved to cook, but at the same time wanted a solution to keeping on eye on her child while he was on the computer. We took a wall on the kitchen and added a desk, phone line and computer line. We also added a top cabinet for storage of lap top, mail, paper, or supplies. My client was so excited about the fact that her child would remain within eyesight while she could prepare the family dinner.
